Also known as: CA19-9, CANCER ANTIGEN 19-9

About the Test
CA 19.9 is a protein that can rise in the blood with certain digestive-tract cancers, particularly of the pancreas and bile ducts. This test is used mainly to monitor people already diagnosed with these cancers and to help assess treatment response, not to screen the general population. Because CA 19.9 can also increase with benign conditions such as gallstones, bile-duct blockage and pancreatitis, results are interpreted as a trend alongside imaging and specialist input.
What is it? A blood test measuring cancer antigen 19-9, also called CA19-9 or CA 19.9, a tumour marker associated mainly with pancreatic and biliary conditions.

How to prepare for the CA 19.9 test
No fasting is required for the CA 19.9 test. You can eat and drink normally, and our DHA-licensed nurse collects the sample at your chosen location in about 20 minutes.
Understanding your CA 19.9 results
A raised CA 19.9 is not proof of cancer, since gallstones, blocked bile ducts, pancreatitis and other benign conditions can also elevate it, and some people do not produce it at all; the trend and imaging matter more than one reading. Your doctor reviews the result, with reports ready in 8 Hours.

Reports are typically ready within 8 Hours of collection. A doctor reviews the result before we deliver it on WhatsApp and email, so you receive it with appropriate context.
No. It is not suitable for general screening because benign conditions raise it and some cancers do not. It is most useful for monitoring a known diagnosis or supporting evaluation under specialist guidance.
Gallstones, bile-duct obstruction, jaundice, pancreatitis and some liver conditions can all elevate CA 19.9. This is why an isolated high value is not diagnostic and needs a doctor's interpretation.
A small proportion of people genetically do not produce CA 19.9, so their level can stay low regardless of disease. Your doctor takes this into account and does not rely on the marker alone.
No fasting is needed for CA 19.9. You can eat and drink as usual, and there is no special preparation required before your home appointment.
