CA 72-4 is a protein that can be elevated in the blood with certain cancers of the stomach and other parts of the digestive tract, and sometimes the ovaries. This test is used mainly to help monitor people already diagnosed with these cancers and to follow their response to treatment, rather than as a screening tool. As benign gastrointestinal conditions can also raise it, CA 72-4 is often combined with other markers and imaging and interpreted as a trend.
