About the Test

PSA Total measures prostate-specific antigen, a protein made by the prostate gland that circulates in the blood. Levels tend to rise with prostate enlargement, inflammation, infection or prostate cancer, so the test is used both to screen men for prostate cancer and to follow known prostate conditions over time. A single reading is rarely conclusive on its own; doctors read it alongside age, symptoms and a physical exam. Men over 50, or younger with a family history, often include it in a routine check.

What is it? A blood test that measures the total amount of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in your blood, also called simply PSA.

PSA Total test: purpose, preparation and results

Why take the PSA Total test?

  • Routine prostate cancer screening for men, typically from age 50 or earlier with a family history
  • Follow-up for urinary symptoms such as weak flow, frequent night-time urination or difficulty passing urine
  • Monitoring men already diagnosed with an enlarged prostate or prostate cancer

How to prepare for the PSA Total test

No fasting is needed. Ideally avoid vigorous cycling, ejaculation and any prostate examination in the 48 hours before the draw, as these can temporarily raise PSA. Mention any urinary infection or catheter to the nurse, since these also affect the result.

Understanding your PSA Total results

A raised PSA can point to benign enlargement, infection or cancer and usually needs repeat testing or referral to a urologist rather than an immediate diagnosis, while a low level is reassuring. Always review your result with a doctor, who will interpret it against your age and symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Anything else? Ask on WhatsApp — we usually reply in three minutes.

  • Your report is ready in about 8 hours after the sample reaches the lab. A doctor reviews it and we send it to you on WhatsApp and email, so most clients booking a morning slot have their result the same day.

  • Not necessarily. PSA also rises with benign prostate enlargement, infection, recent cycling or ejaculation. A single high reading usually leads to a repeat test or a urology review rather than a diagnosis on its own.

  • No fasting is required. The main things to avoid are cycling, ejaculation and prostate exams in the 48 hours before your draw, since these can lift the number and cloud the result.

  • Many men begin around age 50 as part of a routine check. Those with a father or brother who had prostate cancer, or of higher-risk background, often start earlier around 40 to 45 after discussing it with a doctor.

  • Yes. A DHA-licensed nurse comes to your home, office or hotel across Dubai, draws the sample in around 20 minutes, and the blood goes to our ISO-certified partner lab.

  • The PSA Total test is AED 70, self-pay with no insurance paperwork. That covers the at-home nurse visit, the lab analysis and a doctor-reviewed report sent to you digitally.
