About the Test

Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is a protein normally present at very low levels in adults. Because certain cancers, especially colorectal cancer, can raise it, CEA is used mainly to monitor people already diagnosed with cancer and to watch for recurrence after treatment. It is not a standalone screening test for healthy people, as smoking and several benign conditions can also lift the level.

What is it? A tumour marker blood test measuring carcinoembryonic antigen, commonly abbreviated CEA.

Carcinoembryonic Antigen test: purpose, preparation and results

Why take the Carcinoembryonic Antigen test?

  • To monitor treatment response and check for recurrence in diagnosed colorectal and some other cancers
  • As one part of a wider work-up when a doctor is investigating specific symptoms
  • To track a trend over time when a previous CEA level was raised

How to prepare for the Carcinoembryonic Antigen test

No fasting is required for this blood test. Our nurse draws a small sample at your home, office, or hotel in about 20 minutes. Let the ordering doctor know if you smoke, as smoking can modestly raise CEA and helps them interpret the result.

Understanding your Carcinoembryonic Antigen results

A rising CEA over serial tests can signal cancer progression or recurrence and warrants specialist review, while a falling level after treatment is generally reassuring. A single mildly raised value is not proof of cancer, so results must be interpreted by a doctor alongside imaging and clinical findings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Anything else? Ask on WhatsApp — we usually reply in three minutes.

  • No. CEA is not recommended as a general screening test because benign conditions and smoking can raise it and some cancers do not. It is most useful for monitoring people already diagnosed with cancer.

  • CEA is processed at our ISO-certified partner lab and your doctor-reviewed report is usually ready within 8 Hours, sent to you on WhatsApp and email.

  • Yes. Smokers often have slightly higher baseline CEA than non-smokers. This does not mean cancer, but it is worth telling your doctor so the value is read in context.

  • No fasting is needed. You can eat and drink as usual before our nurse visits to collect the sample at your home or workplace.

  • A steadily rising level on repeat tests may suggest the cancer is progressing or has returned, prompting further imaging and specialist assessment. One reading alone is never used to make that decision.

  • BestDOC operates on a self-pay basis. This test is AED 90, paid directly to us, and covers at-home collection and the doctor-reviewed report; we do not file insurance claims.
