About the Test

The Direct Coombs Test, or Direct Antiglobulin Test, checks whether antibodies are stuck to the surface of your red blood cells, which can cause the immune system to destroy them early. Doctors use it when someone has unexplained anaemia, jaundice or signs of red-cell breakdown, and it is important in newborns and in reactions after a blood transfusion. A positive result shows immune-related red-cell coating.

What is it? A blood test, known as the DAT or direct antiglobulin test, that detects antibodies attached directly to your red blood cells.

Direct Coombs Test test: purpose, preparation and results

Why take the Direct Coombs Test test?

  • Investigate suspected autoimmune destruction of red blood cells (haemolytic anaemia)
  • Assess jaundice or anaemia in a newborn from blood-group incompatibility
  • Check for a red-cell reaction after a blood transfusion

How to prepare for the Direct Coombs Test test

No fasting or special preparation is needed for the Direct Coombs Test. Let our nurse and your doctor know about any recent transfusions, pregnancy, or medicines, as these can be relevant to how the result is interpreted.

Understanding your Direct Coombs Test results

A positive Direct Coombs Test means antibodies are coating your red cells, which may explain immune-driven red-cell breakdown, while a negative result makes that cause less likely. The finding must be interpreted with your symptoms and other blood tests by your doctor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Anything else? Ask on WhatsApp — we usually reply in three minutes.

  • Your doctor-reviewed report is delivered by WhatsApp and email within 1 to 2 days of collection. We arrange same-morning or next-day home visits across Dubai.

  • It means antibodies are attached to your red blood cells, which can trigger their early destruction. This supports a diagnosis of immune-related haemolysis, but the underlying cause still needs a doctor's full assessment.

  • Not exactly. The direct test looks for antibodies already on red cells, while the indirect version screens the liquid part of blood for free antibodies. Your doctor chooses the version suited to your situation.

  • No. The Direct Coombs Test needs no fasting or special preparation. Simply mention any recent transfusion, pregnancy or medicines so your doctor can interpret the result accurately.

  • When a baby's and mother's blood groups differ, maternal antibodies can coat the baby's red cells and cause jaundice or anaemia. The test helps confirm this immune cause so the newborn can be managed appropriately.

  • A DHA-licensed nurse visits your chosen location in Dubai, and the draw takes around 20 minutes. Samples are processed at an ISO-certified partner lab, and payment is self-pay in AED.
