About the Test
A reticulocyte count measures the proportion of young, newly made red blood cells in the blood. Because these cells are released from the bone marrow before fully maturing, the count shows how actively the marrow is producing red cells. It is especially useful when someone is anaemic, helping distinguish anaemia caused by low production from anaemia caused by blood loss or red-cell destruction. Doctors also use it to check recovery after treatment for anaemia or after bleeding.
What is it? A blood test measuring the percentage of immature red blood cells (reticulocytes), often shortened to retic or retics.

Reticulocyte Count test: purpose, preparation and results
Why take the Reticulocyte Count test?
- To work out the cause of anaemia by seeing whether the bone marrow is responding
- To monitor recovery after treatment such as iron, B12 or folate replacement
- To assess marrow activity after blood loss or in conditions that destroy red cells
How to prepare for the Reticulocyte Count test
No fasting is required for a reticulocyte count. Let the nurse know about recent transfusions, iron or vitamin therapy, or any bleeding, as these affect how the result is read.
Understanding your Reticulocyte Count results
A high count suggests the marrow is actively replacing red cells, as seen after bleeding, red-cell breakdown or successful treatment, while a low count in an anaemic person suggests the marrow is not producing enough. The number is best interpreted alongside a full blood count by a doctor.

It shows whether your bone marrow is responding to the anaemia. A low count suggests underproduction, while a high count points to blood loss or red-cell destruction, helping your doctor find the cause.
No fasting is needed. It is a simple blood draw that takes around 20 minutes including setup, and you can eat and drink normally.
Recovery from bleeding, treatment for iron or vitamin B12 deficiency, and conditions that break down red cells can all raise it. That is why the result is read alongside your recent history.
Yes, it is often done together with a complete blood count so the doctor can see red-cell numbers and marrow response together, giving a fuller picture of the anaemia.
The reticulocyte count is AED 45, self-pay with no insurance paperwork. The price includes the at-home draw, lab analysis and a doctor-reviewed report.
