About the Test
RPR is a blood test used to screen for syphilis, an infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It detects antibody-like substances the body produces during active infection, so it helps identify current or recent syphilis and can also track how well treatment is working. Because it is a screening test, a reactive result is normally confirmed with a more specific treponemal test before a firm diagnosis is made. It is commonly done during pregnancy, before certain procedures, and as part of a sexual-health check.
What is it? A blood screening test for syphilis, also known as RPR, VDRL or a syphilis screen.

Understanding your Rapid Plasma Reagin - RPR results

Untreated syphilis can pass to the baby, so antenatal screening helps catch and treat it early. If your test is reactive during pregnancy, your doctor will arrange confirmatory testing and appropriate care.
Yes. Because the level tends to fall after successful treatment, doctors often repeat RPR over months to confirm the infection is responding. Interpretation of these changes should always be done by your doctor.
