About the Test

The indirect Coombs test looks for antibodies floating free in your blood that could attack red blood cells. It is a key check in pregnancy, where it screens for antibodies that might affect the baby, and before a blood transfusion, where it helps ensure compatible blood is given. It is also used to investigate certain types of anaemia caused by the immune system reacting against red cells.

What is it? A blood test that detects red-cell antibodies circulating in the plasma, also called the indirect antiglobulin test (IAT).

Indirect Coombs Test test: purpose, preparation and results

Why take the Indirect Coombs Test test?

  • Screen during pregnancy for antibodies that could affect the baby's red blood cells
  • Perform pre-transfusion antibody screening and cross-matching for compatible blood
  • Help investigate suspected immune-related (antibody-mediated) anaemia

How to prepare for the Indirect Coombs Test test

No fasting or special preparation is needed. You can eat and drink as usual. If you are pregnant or have had a recent transfusion or a Rh immunoglobulin injection, let us know, as this information helps your doctor interpret the result.

Understanding your Indirect Coombs Test results

A negative result means no significant red-cell antibodies were detected, while a positive result signals antibodies that may matter for pregnancy or transfusion and warrants further testing. The doctor-reviewed report is typically ready in 1 - 2 days and should be discussed with your physician, especially during pregnancy.

  • It screens for antibodies, such as anti-Rh, that could cross the placenta and affect the baby's red blood cells. Detecting them early lets your doctor plan monitoring or preventive treatment, which is why it is a routine part of antenatal screening.

  • It means antibodies against red blood cells were found in your plasma. This does not diagnose a specific condition by itself, but it prompts your doctor to identify the antibody and decide whether it affects pregnancy or future transfusions.

  • The indirect test looks for antibodies circulating freely in your blood, while the direct test looks for antibodies already attached to your red cells. They answer different questions, so your doctor chooses based on what is being investigated.

  • Yes, you can have this test at any time in your cycle; menstruation does not affect the result. You can book a same-morning or next-day home visit and pay in AED, as home healthcare in the UAE is self-pay.
