About the Test
Folic acid, or folate, is a B vitamin the body needs to make healthy red blood cells, support cell division and, in pregnancy, protect the developing baby's spine and brain. A blood test measures your folate level to check for deficiency, which can cause a particular type of anaemia and is especially important to identify before and during early pregnancy. Low levels may result from poor diet, malabsorption or certain medications.
What is it? A blood test measuring folate, also known as folic acid, vitamin B9 or vitamin B-9.

Folic Acid test: purpose, preparation and results
Why take the Folic Acid test?
- Investigate anaemia or fatigue that may be due to folate deficiency
- Check folate status when planning a pregnancy or in early pregnancy
- Assess nutrition in people with poor diet, malabsorption conditions or on certain long-term medicines
How to prepare for the Folic Acid test
No fasting is required for a folate test unless it is combined with a fasting panel. If you take folic acid or B-vitamin supplements, mention them, as recent doses can raise your reading and affect interpretation.
Understanding your Folic Acid results
A low folate level suggests deficiency, which can cause anaemia and, in pregnancy, increase the risk to the baby, so it usually prompts dietary advice or supplementation. Folate results are often read together with vitamin B12, since the two are linked. Your doctor reviews the report and advises on treatment.

Adequate folate before and during early pregnancy helps the baby's neural tube develop properly, reducing the risk of spinal and brain defects. This is why testing and supplementation are commonly advised when planning a pregnancy.
Do not stop a prescribed supplement without advice. Instead, tell us you take it, as recent doses raise the measured level. Your doctor can factor this in or advise on timing if a true baseline is needed.
