This blood test detects CMV IgM antibodies, which the immune system produces early after a cytomegalovirus infection. Their presence suggests a recent or active infection, whereas their absence makes a current acute infection less likely. It is most useful when someone has an unexplained fever, glandular-fever-like illness, or during pregnancy assessment, since CMV can matter for an unborn baby and for people with weakened immunity.
