About the Test

This test looks for heterophile antibodies produced during infectious mononucleosis, the illness usually caused by Epstein-Barr virus and often called glandular fever. It supports the diagnosis in someone with a sore throat, swollen glands, fever and marked fatigue. A positive result points towards mono, while a negative result, especially very early in the illness, does not always rule it out.

What is it? A rapid blood test for infectious mononucleosis, also called a monospot or heterophile antibody test.

Monospot test: purpose, preparation and results

Why take the Monospot test?

  • Help confirm suspected glandular fever with sore throat, swollen glands and fatigue
  • Distinguish mono from other causes of a severe sore throat
  • Support diagnosis when tiredness and swollen lymph nodes are prominent

How to prepare for the Monospot test

No fasting or special preparation is required. You can eat and drink normally. Tell our nurse how long you have had symptoms, as very early testing can be less reliable.

Understanding your Monospot results

A positive monospot supports infectious mononucleosis, while a negative result, particularly in the first days of illness, does not fully exclude it and may need repeating or further EBV-specific testing. Your doctor will interpret the result with your symptoms and examination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Anything else? Ask on WhatsApp — we usually reply in three minutes.

  • The monospot is a rapid test, and your doctor-reviewed result is delivered on WhatsApp and email within 1 day of the home collection.

  • Yes. Heterophile antibodies may not have developed in the first days of illness, so an early negative can be falsely reassuring. Your doctor may repeat it or order specific EBV antibody tests.

  • No fasting is needed for a monospot. You can eat and drink as usual before the sample is taken.

  • A persistent severe sore throat, swollen neck glands, fever and pronounced fatigue are typical. These overlap with other infections, which is why the test and a doctor's assessment are used together.

  • Epstein-Barr virus commonly spreads through saliva, hence the nickname kissing disease. If mono is confirmed, your doctor can advise on rest and reducing spread; this test simply helps make the diagnosis.

  • A DHA-licensed nurse attends your home, office or hotel in Dubai for a quick draw of about 20 minutes. It is a self-pay test priced in AED.
