Low calcium can relate to vitamin D deficiency, parathyroid or kidney conditions, or low protein levels. Your doctor interprets it alongside other results, since total calcium is influenced by blood albumin.
Much of the calcium in blood is bound to the protein albumin. Measuring albumin lets doctors adjust the total calcium reading so it more accurately reflects your true calcium status, especially if protein levels are abnormal.
