Blood Urea Nitrogen measures the amount of urea, a waste product of protein breakdown, that your kidneys filter out of the blood. When the kidneys are working well, BUN stays within a normal band; a raised level can point to reduced kidney function, dehydration, or a high-protein state, while a low level is less common. It is often checked routinely, before certain medications, or when symptoms suggest a kidney or hydration problem.
