The Widal test is a blood test that helps support a diagnosis of typhoid and paratyphoid (enteric) fever. It detects antibodies against Salmonella Typhi and Paratyphi antigens that rise during infection. Rising or high antibody titres, alongside symptoms such as prolonged fever, headache and abdominal discomfort, can point to enteric fever. It is a symptom-driven test, often used where blood culture is not immediately available.

Understanding your Widal Test results
A high or rising antibody titre supports enteric fever, but the Widal test can give false positives and negatives, so it is not diagnostic on its own. Your doctor will interpret it with your symptoms and, where needed, blood culture. Results are delivered within 1 - 2 Days.
