About the Test
This test measures the level of lithium in your blood, a mood-stabilising medication prescribed for bipolar disorder and some forms of depression. Lithium has a narrow therapeutic window, so levels that are too low may not control symptoms while levels that are too high can be toxic. It is used to confirm you are within a safe, effective dose range and to guide any adjustments your doctor makes.
What is it? A blood test that measures serum lithium concentration to monitor lithium therapy, also called a lithium level or Li test.

Lithium - Li test: purpose, preparation and results
Why take the Lithium - Li test?
- Confirm your lithium dose is within the safe therapeutic range
- Check for possible lithium toxicity if you have tremor, nausea, confusion or unsteadiness
- Guide dose changes after starting treatment or altering the amount you take
How to prepare for the Lithium - Li test
No fasting is needed. Timing matters: this level should be drawn about 12 hours after your last dose, so let our nurse know when you last took lithium. Bring or note your current dose.
Understanding your Lithium - Li results
A result within the therapeutic range suggests your dose is appropriate, while a high level can signal toxicity and a low level may mean the dose is too small to work. Always review results with the doctor managing your treatment before changing anything.

No fasting is required. You can eat and drink normally. What matters is the timing relative to your last lithium dose, not food intake.
Coarse tremor, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, drowsiness, confusion or unsteady walking can suggest a high level. These are reasons to test promptly and seek medical advice, not to self-adjust your dose.
