About the Test

D-Dimer measures a small protein fragment released when a blood clot forms and then breaks down in the body. A low or normal level makes an active clotting problem unlikely, while a raised level suggests increased clot formation and breakdown somewhere in the body. It is mainly used to help rule out conditions such as deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism when they are suspected, rather than as a general wellness screen.

What is it? A blood test measuring D-dimer, a fragment produced when blood clots dissolve, used to assess clotting activity.

D-Dimer test: purpose, preparation and results

Why take the D-Dimer test?

  • Help rule out suspected deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism when symptoms occur
  • Support assessment of unusual clotting or bleeding tendencies alongside other tests
  • Follow up certain clotting-related conditions when directed by a doctor

How to prepare for the D-Dimer test

No fasting is required for the D-Dimer test. There is no special preparation; continue your usual routine and medications unless your doctor advises otherwise. Mention any recent surgery, injury or pregnancy, as these can naturally raise D-dimer.

Understanding your D-Dimer results

A normal D-dimer makes a significant clot unlikely and is often used to help exclude one, while a raised level indicates increased clotting activity that needs a doctor's assessment. Because many conditions can lift D-dimer, a high result is not a diagnosis on its own and requires medical follow-up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Anything else? Ask on WhatsApp — we usually reply in three minutes.

  • Results are typically ready in 1 - 2 Days after collection. A doctor reviews your report and we send it on WhatsApp and email, priced in AED on a self-pay basis with no insurance forms to complete.

  • Suspected deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism is a medical emergency. If you have sudden leg swelling, chest pain or breathlessness, seek urgent care now rather than waiting for a home test; D-dimer is only one part of an assessment.

  • No fasting is needed. You can eat and drink normally beforehand and keep taking your usual medications, unless your doctor has told you otherwise.

  • Recent surgery, injury, infection, inflammation, pregnancy and increasing age can all raise D-dimer. That is why a high result is interpreted by a doctor in context rather than treated as proof of a clot.

  • Yes. D-dimer tends to rise naturally during pregnancy, so results are interpreted differently for expectant mothers. Always tell the nurse and reviewing doctor if you are pregnant so your report is read correctly.

  • A DHA-licensed nurse collects your sample at home, office or hotel across Dubai, usually in about 20 minutes, and it is processed at our ISO-certified partner labs with next-day reporting.
