About the Test
The Anti-Gliadin Antibody test detects antibodies your immune system makes against gliadin, a component of the gluten protein found in wheat, barley and rye. Raised levels can point to an immune reaction to gluten and are used to help investigate suspected coeliac disease or gluten sensitivity, particularly in people with bloating, diarrhoea, unexplained weight loss or nutrient deficiencies. It is usually ordered alongside newer, more specific coeliac markers and is interpreted by a doctor rather than in isolation.
What is it? Anti-Gliadin Ab (also called AGA or gliadin antibody) is a blood test that measures antibodies directed against the gliadin fraction of gluten.

Anti-Gliadin Ab test: purpose, preparation and results
Why take the Anti-Gliadin Ab test?
- To help investigate digestive symptoms such as chronic diarrhoea, bloating, cramping or unexplained weight loss
- As part of a work-up for suspected coeliac disease or gluten sensitivity, often with tTG and endomysial antibody tests
- To help explain iron, folate or other nutrient deficiencies that may follow poor gluten-related absorption
How to prepare for the Anti-Gliadin Ab test
No fasting is required for this test. Importantly, keep eating your normal gluten-containing diet in the weeks before the sample, because cutting out gluten early can lower antibody levels and mask a true result.
Understanding your Anti-Gliadin Ab results
Higher antibody levels suggest an immune response to gluten and usually prompt further, more specific coeliac testing, while a normal result makes an active gluten reaction less likely. Results are not diagnostic on their own; your doctor will interpret them with your symptoms and other tests. Reports are ready in 7 - 10 days.

No. Keep eating your usual gluten-containing foods for several weeks before the test. Going gluten-free early can lower the antibodies and produce a falsely normal result, which may delay diagnosis.
Not by itself. A raised level signals an immune reaction to gluten but needs confirmation with more specific antibody tests, and sometimes a gastroscopy and biopsy. Your doctor will guide the next steps.
