Anti Islet Cell Antibody (ICA) detects immune antibodies aimed at the insulin-producing islet cells of the pancreas, a marker linked with autoimmune, type 1 diabetes. It is used to help clarify the type of diabetes when the diagnosis is uncertain, or to assess risk in people with a strong family history. A result is meaningful only alongside blood sugar tests and the clinical picture, not on its own.

No. A negative ICA does not exclude diabetes, and some people with autoimmune diabetes test negative for this particular antibody. Your doctor may consider other antibody or glucose tests as needed.
