About the Test

Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) is an enzyme found mainly in the liver and bones, with smaller amounts in the intestine and, during pregnancy, the placenta. Measuring it helps flag disorders of the liver and bile ducts as well as conditions affecting bone turnover. It is a common part of routine liver and bone check-ups, and doctors also order it when someone has symptoms such as jaundice, bone pain or unexplained itching.

What is it? A blood test measuring the enzyme alkaline phosphatase, also called ALP or ALK PHOS, released mainly from the liver and bones.

Alkaline Phosphatase test: purpose, preparation and results

Why take the Alkaline Phosphatase test?

  • Included in routine liver function and general health screening
  • Help investigate symptoms of liver or bile-duct problems such as jaundice or itching
  • Assess bone conditions or unexplained bone pain, often alongside calcium and vitamin D

How to prepare for the Alkaline Phosphatase test

No fasting is required for alkaline phosphatase on its own. If it is part of a wider liver or metabolic panel that includes fasting tests such as glucose or lipids, follow the fasting instructions for that panel. Otherwise you can give the sample at any convenient time of day.

Understanding your Alkaline Phosphatase results

A raised ALP can reflect liver or bile-duct issues or increased bone activity, and it can be normally higher in growing children and during pregnancy; low levels are less common. Because ALP comes from more than one source, a doctor may use related tests to pinpoint the cause and should review your result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Anything else? Ask on WhatsApp — we usually reply in three minutes.

  • Your doctor-reviewed ALP report is ready in 8 Hours and sent to you by WhatsApp and email, so a morning sample is typically back the same day.

  • No fasting is needed for alkaline phosphatase by itself. Only fast if it is bundled with a fasting panel such as a lipid profile or fasting glucose, in which case follow that panel's instructions.

  • A high result can come from the liver and bile ducts or from bone. It is not a diagnosis by itself; your doctor may add tests such as GGT to work out whether the source is liver or bone.

  • Growing children have active bones, and the placenta produces ALP in pregnancy, so higher levels can be normal in these groups. Your doctor interprets your result against what is expected for your situation.

  • A DHA-licensed nurse collects a small blood sample at your home, office or hotel in Dubai, usually in about 20 minutes, with same-morning or next-day appointments.

  • Payment is self-pay in AED; we do not process insurance. You can arrange payment when booking your at-home appointment.
