About the Test

Erythropoietin (EPO) is a hormone made mainly by the kidneys that signals your bone marrow to produce red blood cells. Measuring EPO helps clarify why someone has too few red cells (anaemia) or too many (polycythaemia): a low level alongside anaemia points to a kidney or hormone problem, while a high level with a raised red-cell count may suggest the body is compensating for low oxygen or, rarely, a tumour producing excess EPO.

What is it? A blood test measuring erythropoietin, the kidney hormone that drives red blood cell production, also known simply as EPO.

Erythropoietin test: purpose, preparation and results

Why take the Erythropoietin test?

  • Investigate unexplained anaemia to see whether the kidneys are producing enough EPO
  • Help distinguish primary polycythaemia (bone marrow disorder) from secondary causes of a high red-cell count
  • Assess EPO output in people with chronic kidney disease or those on erythropoietin-stimulating therapy

How to prepare for the Erythropoietin test

No fasting is required for this test. If you are receiving erythropoietin injections or other treatment for anaemia, mention it so the doctor can interpret your result correctly.

Understanding your Erythropoietin results

A low EPO level with anaemia often reflects reduced kidney production, while a high level may signal the body responding to low oxygen or, less commonly, an EPO-secreting tumour. Your report is reviewed by a doctor, and results should always be read alongside a full blood count and your symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Anything else? Ask on WhatsApp — we usually reply in three minutes.

  • Erythropoietin is a specialised assay, so results take around 7 days from the time your sample is collected. You will receive the doctor-reviewed report on WhatsApp and by email once it is ready.

  • No fasting is needed. EPO can be drawn at any time of day, though results are most useful when paired with a recent complete blood count so your red-cell levels can be compared.

  • A raised EPO usually means your body is trying to make more red cells, often in response to low oxygen from lung or heart conditions, smoking or altitude. Rarely, certain kidney or other tumours secrete extra EPO. A doctor will interpret the cause.

  • Yes. A DHA-licensed nurse visits your home, office or hotel across Dubai, and the blood draw takes about 20 minutes. The sample is then processed at our ISO-certified partner lab.

  • It is usually requested to work out the cause of an abnormal red blood cell count, either anaemia that isn't explained by iron or vitamin deficiency, or a high red-cell count that needs a cause identified.

  • The erythropoietin test is priced in AED and is self-pay, as home healthcare in the UAE is not covered by insurance. You can settle the fee directly when you book your at-home appointment.
